There’s life before death

From a biologist’s viewpoint, sentience, personality, and playing are no suitable characteristics for deciding on the use and the form of use of animals by humans. Such decision can result but from a human point of view, and with imperfect definition. For the ethical evaluation of any use it is more important to objectively assess the extent of mutual benefits and the possibilities to minimise the suffering caused by the use. It is crucial to differentiate between an optimal relationship of mutual benefit, a symbiotic partnership in its best case, and an ethically dubious exploitation to the detriment and at the expense of the used beings and
the ecosystem.
